Opening a New Region: Placing the General Manager Who Could Build the Commercial Foundation From Zero

The Challenge

A PE-backed European SaaS platform had built strong product-market fit in its core markets. The business had grown rapidly: revenue compounding year on year, headcount expanding, and a recent round of acquisitions fully integrated into a single unified platform. The investor thesis called for geographic expansion into new European regions, and one major German-speaking market sat at the top of the priority list.

The problem was leadership. Entering a new region with a SaaS product that works elsewhere is not the same as winning that region. The platform needed a general manager to own the market commercially: build the local sales operation, carry P&L accountability, and drive customer acquisition in a market with limited existing infrastructure and no senior presence on the ground.

What made the search hard was the combination required. The candidate needed direct experience selling B2B SaaS subscriptions to independent, owner-managed service operators in German-speaking markets. Most senior commercial talent in the region comes from enterprise software, where the customer motion and ownership model are entirely different. The right profile existed, but not inside the client's own sector. It sat one vertical over.

They turned to The Big Search.

Overview of the executive search

PE-backed European B2B SaaS platform | October 2024 → March 2025 | PE Value Creation: Pan-European Commercial Expansion Phase

In October 2024, The Big Search partnered with a major German-speaking European region to find its first General Manager. The search was a single mandate with clear scope: a regional commercial leader, full P&L ownership, responsible for building the market from limited infrastructure. We closed the search in March 2025.

Executive Search Across German-Speaking European B2B SaaS and Hospitality-Adjacent Software

The search focused on B2B SaaS businesses serving independent service operators in adjacent verticals: beauty, wellness, fitness, and appointment-led hospitality software. These companies share the same core customer profile as the client. The operator is an owner-managed SMB, often subscription-averse at first and loyal once onboarded, who buys on trust, margin protection, and simplicity. Candidates from these businesses arrive with the selling motion already understood.

Target profile criteria:

  • 8 to 15 years of commercial or general management experience in B2B SaaS
  • Direct experience scaling a regional sales operation across German-speaking markets with quota ownership
  • Sector background in SMB-facing subscription software: beauty, wellness, fitness, or hospitality-adjacent
  • Comfortable carrying P&L accountability with limited central support
  • Native German speaker, based in or willing to operate locally in the target region
  • Experience inside a European PE-backed or growth equity-backed environment

Target company archetypes included appointment and salon management SaaS platforms, SMB operations software businesses, and regional scale-ups backed by European growth investors with comparable customer motion and subscription economics to the client.

We undertook an exhaustive mapping exercise across the target region and broader Northern Europe, identifying 102 candidates.

The funnel narrowed sharply after the initial mapping. Of 102 candidates identified, 27 reached recruiter interview stage. The combination of regional P&L ownership, SMB SaaS background, and a proven track record in German-speaking markets was genuinely rare. Much of the regional SaaS talent pool sits in enterprise software, where the customer and ownership model are entirely different. Six candidates reached client interview. The client moved decisively. The search closed 23 days after the first shortlist was delivered and 141 days from kick-off.

The Placed Candidate: A Decade of Scaling B2B SaaS to Independent Service Operators Across German-Speaking Europe

The placed candidate had never worked in the client's sector. They had spent ten years doing something that transferred almost directly: selling B2B SaaS subscriptions to owner-managed beauty and wellness businesses across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and building the commercial infrastructure to support growth at regional scale. The customer they understood (an independent operator who resists technology, buys on trust, and churns if the product adds friction) is the same customer the client serves.

Their most recent role was Head of Sales at a venture-backed European beauty SaaS platform, where they led commercial growth across multiple European markets through a growth equity raise. Before that, more than five years at one of Europe's largest beauty marketplace and SaaS businesses, where they progressed from city-level sales manager to regional sales lead for German-speaking markets to B2B marketing manager. Earlier in their career, four and a half years in controlling and procurement at a major European e-commerce company gave their financial rigour that most commercial leaders at their level acquire slowly, if at all.

Why they fit:

🏗️ Domain adjacency: Ten years selling subscription SaaS to independent salon and wellness operators; the same SMB owner profile, the same objections, and the same onboarding challenges the client faces.

🗺️ Regional ownership: Led sales operations across German-speaking markets at two separate companies; they knew the market, the regional dynamics, and how to build from limited infrastructure.

📈 Venture-backed growth environment: Scaled a commercial function through a growth equity raise at their most recent employer, with comparable investor pace and revenue expectations to those the client's PE backer applies.

💰 Financial rigour: Four and a half years in controlling at a major e-commerce company; comfortable with budgets, KPIs, and the metrics lens of a P&L owner before they were ever a P&L owner.

🌍 In-market from day one: Native German speaker, locally based; no relocation, no cultural adjustment, no ramp time on the geography.

Entering a new region with a product that works elsewhere is not a strategy. The commercial infrastructure still has to be built, the local customer motion still has to be understood, and the person leading it has to operate without the support structures that exist in established markets.

The best regional operators for SMB SaaS platforms are rarely found inside your own industry. The right search looks for the customer motion and the ownership model, not the sector label.

If you are building regional commercial leadership for a PE-backed SaaS platform in Europe, we should talk.
